Charlottesville’s St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish is a busy ministry, including faithful from the University of Virginia as well local Catholics. But there also is a tranquil repose for the eight Dominican friars who reside there: The Priory.
Alexander Nicholson acted as general contractor for a beautiful private chapel and worship space within the Priory. Custom pieces of oak were precisely trimmed and fitted for sanctuary, pews, and inlaid floor designs. Cain Architectural Glass designed the East and West windows, incorporating Dominican symbols. Underneath the chapel, The St. Vincent Ferrer Columbarium provides 50 memorial spaces in beautifully crafted marble drawers.
Alexander Nicholson’s relationship with the Dominicans continues, as groundbreaking nears on a new Romanesque-style sanctuary that will increase seating from 800 to 1,200 parishioners. The firm is collaborating with Cram + Ferguson Architects, Boston, and Train Architects, Charlottesville.
